Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I looked at Delon Wright’s shot-blocking, which is tracking as exceptional for a player his size.
Delon Wright had a moment on Monday night. Squaring off with the San Antonio Spurs, Wright pushed the ball in transition, approached a flat-footed Manu Ginobili, and proceeded to deliver a picture-perfect Euro steparound the Argentine. Ginobili has made a career out of killing defenders with that same move, and while Wright didn’t beam in the immediate aftermath on the court, he allowed himself to enjoy the fact that he’d essentially just hit someone with their own finishing move.
“Doing this move on the creator is by far one of my proudest moments,” Wright said on Instagram later.
There is a lot of Ginobili in Wright’s idiosyncratic approach to the game, the constant changes in speed and direction borrowed right from Ginobili’s playbook. It’s clear Ginobili was a formative influence on Wright, at least on the offensive end.
