Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Detroit, I spoke to K.J. McDaniels about his bet on himself as a rookie and a new bet on himself in the G League as he tried to make his way back to the NBA.
MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — There’s a slight hum of anticipation. It’s the first half of the opening game of the 2018 G League Showcase, and only a small portion of those who would eventually make up the Hershey Centre attendance have settled in. The Grand Rapids Drive have forced a turnover and are coming down the floor on a 3-on-2. A bad outlet pass down the left wing, behind its intended target, matters little. It’s corralled, gathered and, cocked back to avoid the gliding outstretched arm of James Southerland, slammed home for a dunk.
The sound is unmistakable, the rimless flush of leather. The highlight as a whole feels quite familiar, even to those who haven’t had a chance to flip through the event’s roster sheets yet.
Oh, yeah. K.J. McDaniels is here.
