Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I looked at the Raptors’ acquisition of CJ Miles, a pretty seamless offensive fit.
C.J. Miles can shoot the hell out of the basketball.
There were a lot of interesting things that happened with the Raptors this weekend, as president Masai Ujiri and company took a hatchet to the team’s cap sheet and made a move to balance out what was left of the roster. Their young players have looked great at Las Vegas Summer League. DeMar DeRozan promised more threes on a NBA TV broadcast, then filled up a highlight reel at the Drew League. (You can go ahead and throw in Canada winning the Under-19 FIBA World Cup, too, given the likely adjacency of Raptor and Canada Basketball fans.)
But through it all, Miles’ ability to shoot the ball was the popular topic of conversation with those around the league in Vegas on Sunday. That ability isn’t new, of course, but it has renewed relevance.
On Sunday, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Raptors are in the stages of finalizing a sign-and-trade agreement to bring Miles to Toronto. The proposed plan is for the Indiana Pacers to sign Miles to a three-year, $25-million deal, then trade him to the Raptors for Cory Joseph.
