Title: Explaining Fred VanVleet’s eventual restricted free agency
Date: March 7, 2018
Original Source: The Athletic
Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I explained what Fred VanVleet’s restricted free agency might look like this summer, explaining some of the more confusing details of the RFA market.
A number of smaller salary cap related questions have popped up in the last week or so. I didn’t initially feel any of them warranted their own full post, but I wanted somewhere to direct people if these same questions come up down the stretch (or, in this case, in the summer). With the Toronto Raptors on the road today and off tomorrow after a back-to-back, it felt like a reasonable time to get a few birds stoned at once. Or however that saying goes. I ended up writing too much about one question alone, as I’m wont to do, and so I’ll double back to questions about Nigel Hayes and the Raptors’ two-way players later in the week. For now, we discuss Fred VanVleet and Fred VanVleet alone.
Because my colleague Eric Koreen did such a good job on this VanVleet featureand because VanVleet continues to be one of the league’s better advanced-stats performers, two questions have followed:
- What will VanVleet’s bet on himself pay out?
- Will the Raptors be the ones paying it?
