Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I broke down some of the key tactical areas to focus on as the Raptors meet the Cavaliers for a third straight postseason.
As the Toronto Raptors set to take on the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third postseason in a row, they have at their disposal a wealth of valuable game tape. Which is good, because most of the data they would have available to them is incredibly noisy. The Cavaliers have changed their personnel so frequently and the three meetings between the teams this season are so coloured by roster turnover, injury, and in one case, extreme schedule fatigue, that the Raptors won’t be able to lean heavily on potentially prescriptive statistical takeaways. If you’re hungry to sift for those, by all means.
At least there’s film. The Cavs have gone through plenty of change, but LeBron James remains at the centre of everything offensively and their base defensive strategy has not changed significantly. Both of Toronto’s two losses were entirely winnable if they executed better, which the hope is they’ll do with three days of preparation, fatigue removed as a factor, and even more tape of themselves against James and company to study. What follows are some tactical areas to keep an eye on as the series gets going.
