Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I wrote about Raptors Summer League player Giddy Potts, who wants to make sure people remember his unusual name.

When his time at Middle Tennessee State, or wherever he wound up, concluded, what did he hope to do? It’s the type of question even non-athlete student applicants get asked, a staple of interviews and, in most cases, a fairly superficial career-oriented answer. Even as he went through a recruiting process a little light on interest – Potts was not ranked as a Class of 2014 recruit – Potts had bigger ideas.

They were like, ‘Are you serious?’ I said, ‘For sure.’ And we’re here now. So I guess that name is kinda big. I said four years ago, I really came a long way and got this name where it’s supposed to be.”

His name, of course, is what first catches people’s attention. It’s hard not to enjoy a handle like Giddy, and Potts’ personality matches the nickname. He is always heavy on energy and positivity, with a bright smile, a deep, hearty laugh and a spirited style of play. If Potts is able to make a name for himself, as he intends, it will be an easy one to remember.
