Title: Wade’s throwback performance brings out ambivalence in Wright, Raptors

Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic, I wrote about Dwyane Wade’s throwback night against the Raptors and the mixed feelings it brought up for Delon Wright and some others.
If there was any team in the NBA who should have known Dwyane Wade still had a night like this in him, it was the Toronto Raptors. Some have played him in the playoffs as members of the Raptors, others have squared off with him in the NBA Finals elsewhere, and others still grew up idolizing Wade, as their brother’s teammate. As Wade turned in a throwback performance Sunday with 35 points, it was the latter — Delon Wright — who felt the early brunt.
“He was just like, ‘That’s how you feel?’” Wright said after the game.
Actually, Wright may have been responsible for Wade’s outburst. Wade started going late in the first quarter when both players came off their respective benches, and Wright answered an early Wade barrage with a pair of threes early in the second. Not much of a trash talker, Wade gave Wright the little jab to let him know that a response was coming, pairing it with an ever-widening smile with each successive bucket and an occasional wink to his defender.
“He hit a couple tough shots and I’m like , ‘Yeah, this could get him going,’” Wright said. “I didn’t see 35, I didn’t think he’d have 35.”
