Title: Remembered All Dai: Jordan Loyd honours the memory of best friend through success with Raptors

Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I wrote about Jordan Loyd’s loss of a best friend and brother in college and how that moment changed his life and basketball career.
The two most important moments of Jordan Loyd’s rookie season with the Toronto Raptors came in November, just a few days apart. The first was in Chicago on the basketball court. There, Loyd calmly sank a pair of free throws and, later, a pair of threes for his first NBA points.
The second moment came in Atlanta, the city he calls home, in a Chick-fil-A.
Sitting across from Loyd at the restaurant was the woman he’s known most of his life as Miss Deirdre. She has been an integral part of the Loyd family since Jordan was a child, and the opportunity to spend an afternoon with her — and be the one treating — was an early highlight of his season.
The two moments occurring so close together offered a moment of reflection. Here he was, sharing his NBA dream with Miss Deirdre, a dream he’s not sure would have happened had their bond not been tied by tragedy. Her full name is Deirdre Parker, and she is the mother of Dai-Jon Parker, Loyd’s best friend who drowned in a tubing accident on May 28, 2015.
