Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I wrote about Canada Basketball naming Rowan Barrett teir new general manager, why it makes sense, and what comes next
Rowan Barrett knows better than anyone in the Canada Basketball program what the Olympics mean. The opportunity to represent one’s country on the biggest international stage is a rare honor. In Canada, it has been even more elusive, as the seventh-place Olympic team Barrett co-captained in 2000 represents the last berth for the program on that stage. Almost nobody has played more basketball for Canada than Barrett, who was a part of the senior men’s program from 1993 to 2008 and ranks second all-time in games played.
It seems fitting, then, that Barrett will play a major role in Canada’s next Olympic berth. At least, if all goes to plan.
“I’ve been in this for so long, for decades now. I think that wanting our country to do well on the international stage is one of the main reasons why we do this. That’s a service to your country that you take very seriously,” Barrett told The Athletic. “I think the emotion is more excitement more than anything else at this point.”
