Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I wrote about Kyle Lowry winning an NBA Championship.
OAKLAND, Calif. — Kyle Lowry does not drink.
If there were ever an occasion to stray from that ideal, it would be the night he won his first NBA championship. Lowry realized that goal Thursday in Oakland as the Raptors defeated the Golden State Warriors 114-110 in Game 6. He did not, however, pivot from his teetotalling. As champagne sprayed all around the Raptors locker room and spilled outside of it, Lowry participated briefly and otherwise handled media duties or soaked in the scene with his family.
It would have been understandable if Lowry imbibed for the occasion. It’s even more understandable why he wouldn’t. Lowry had worked his whole life for this moment and wanted to appreciate every beat of it. And what could be more intoxicating than the greatest achievement of your professional life?
