Title: Digging into Reese McGuire’s opportunity with the Blue Jays this season and beyond

Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I wrote about Blue Jays’ catcher Reese McGuire, a formerly touted prospect with a small window ahead to make a case for his future with the club.
It is not exactly the way a player imagines getting the call to the major leagues. Reese McGuire was sitting in a hotel in Durham, N.C., preparing to suit up for the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons when his call came. Manager Bobby Meacham was on the line letting McGuire know that not only had he been recalled by the Toronto Blue Jays, but that an oblique strain suffered by Luke Maile meant McGuire was being activated while in transit.
What’s normally supposed to be one of the happiest calls of a player’s career was instead a hurried one, with little time for the weight of the occasion to set in. At least not if he wanted to pack his bags, get to the ballpark to collect his things and still make his flight in time.
“That’s my first kind of experience like that,” McGuire said. “I had about an hour to get to the airport, so, it was a quick one.”
