Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I made 15 bold predictions for the 2019-20 Toronto Raptors season.
How bold is bold enough to classify a prediction as such?
It was a question I ran into annually when I wrote at Fangraphs and Rotographs, where we were required to provide 10 bold predictions for each fantasy season.
The catch with such a descriptor is that it’s subjective. It’s like the word spicy. There are some ways to quantify it – the Scoville scale for spiciness, a percentile-outcome likeliness for boldness – but each person could have a different baseline. My Vancouver colleague Thomas Drance, for example, used to keep hot sauce in his desk drawer; we’re going to have different tolerances for spice. I like a little sweetness with my spice, so I tend to lean toward a hot-honey wing or an adoboloco hot sauce.
In terms of fantasy baseball predictions, a few of us settled on an acceptable, post-facto level of boldness: Between three and seven correct predictions was the sweet spot. Get fewer than three right and you’re an idiot. Get more than seven right and you obviously weren’t bold enough. Plant your flag in Sergio Santos too many years in a row and your career path shifts further and further toward basketball. It’s a tough balance to strike.
What follows are 15 predictions for the 2019-20 Toronto Raptors season made in the spirit of reasonable boldness.
