Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I profiled @BaynesFanClub, the bizarre and excellent Aron Baynes online fan account that is now a part of the Raptors along with Baynes.
When it was first reported that the Toronto Raptors were signing veteran centre Aron Baynes, my mind immediately went to a game from late in the 2017-18 season when the centre, then with the Boston Celtics, torched the Raptors with jumpers. It’s one of those short-burst performances that stand out when you follow a team in detail for a long time, one that was as funny for its probabilistic unlikelihood as it was frustrating because, well, Aron Baynes was torching the Raptors with jumpers.
For the person behind the incredible @BaynesFanClub Twitter account, another Baynes play came to mind. It took place this past season, with Baynes, then a Phoenix Sun, pump-faking Serge Ibaka and unleashing a beautiful floater from the elbow.
Standing just behind Baynes on the replay, adorned in a denim jacket with a perfect view of the play, was Drake.
