Title: Andre Drummond to the Raptors? A deal would pose difficult math questions

Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I broke down the Raptors’ reported interest in acquiring Andre Drummond.
In one of the most popular clips from the Toronto Raptors’ documentary series Open Gym, Jonas Valanciunas thanks Masai Ujiri with a laugh and a handshake as they cross paths at the team’s practice facility. Valanciunas reveals that when he saw his face next to Andre Drummond’s in some news and rumours, “I was like, please no.”
“Hey!” Ujiri yells as Valanciunas leaves. “You are way better than Drummond.”
This was shortly after the 2016-17 NBA trade deadline, during which the Raptors were very aggressive. After making a run to the Eastern Conference finals the year prior, a largely run-it-back version of that team was struggling through a prolonged and uncharacteristic bout of poor play. Ujiri and the front office first landed Serge Ibaka, then P.J. Tucker, and Valanciunas’ name had come up as a potential outbound piece. Specifically, a framework built around Valanciunas for Drummond had been discussed, according to reporting from Sports Illustrated.
