Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I broke down where the Raptors stand post-deadline in terms of roster, pick equity, future cap sheet, and more.
I’ve been waiting for another disaster. And I was kinda hoping you’d stay. I was kinda hoping you’d stay.” – The Wonder Years
The trade deadline came and went without the emotional, franchise-altering move many expected for the Toronto Raptors. The best Raptor of all-time remains in the red and white, or purple and black, or black and gold. Kyle Lowry will close out his ninth season with the team and head into free agency with the possibility of sticking around even longer.
The news of Lowry remaining came only after a couple of earlier red herrings. The Raptors dealt Norman Powell to Portland in what could reasonably be thought of as a decision entirely separate from Lowry’s future. But then the Raptors flipped Matt Thomas and Terence Davis II for second-round picks, clearing roster spots and hinting at the Raptors acquiring extra bodies. Surely, that meant Lowry was outbound?
