Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I dropped some news and notes collected from the G League Showcase in Mississauga.
I spent most of last week going back and forth between the Air Canada Centre and Hershey Centre, spending a lot of time in Mississauga for the G League Showcase. The four-day event is a veritable who’s who of the NBA world, with scouts and executives from most, if not all teams, plenty of ex-players to keep an eye out for in the coaching, scouting, or management ranks, and 26 basketball games of a higher quality than in years past thanks in part to the existence of two-way contracts better stocking the top of G League depth charts.
What follows are some notes and highlights as they pertain to the Toronto Raptors organization. (I tried my best to answer the questions posted on the 905 midseason report card. Apologies if I wasn’t able.)
Alfonzo McKinnie’s deal guarantees
All NBA contracts become guaranteed as of Jan. 10. That means when 5 p.m. passed on Jan. 7 and Alfonzo McKinnie was still on the roster, the remainder of his $815,615 salary for the year became locked in. This always seemed a relative certainty, given how fond of McKinnie the Raptors are, how close they think he is to rounding out his game, and the fact that he has a non-guaranteed second year on his contract that doesn’t lock in until after Summer League in July. That’s important flexibility.
