Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I wrote about the Raptors taking a calculated risk with an all-in push for Marc Gasol.
How old is 34, really?
This is kind of the question after the Raptors acquired Marc Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies at the trade deadline Thursday in a deal first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The Raptors are sending Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright, C.J. Miles and a 2024 second-round pick for the three-time All-Star and former Defensive Player of the Year.
“Former” is the operative word there. It is not so much that Gasol is no longer good, because he is. Whether he can still reach the heights of peak Gasol, a player the Raptors had eyes on over the years according to intermittent reports, is of more debate. The version of Gasol from even two years ago would render this deal a no-brainer. The current iteration of Gasol is a little older, a little less effective defensively and a lot more expensive than the centre he’ll be replacing for the remainder of this year and likely next.
