Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I looked at the debate between Jalen Green and Jalen Suggs for the Raptors if they pick in the top four in the draft.

A disappointing basketball season tends to bleed at the edges into other disappointing seasons.

For the Toronto Raptors, no season qualifies quite like the 2004-05 campaign. Sure, there are memories — the Vince Carter trade, Rafael Araujo’s rookie season, the Pape Sow experience — but few of them were positive and, other than the Carter deal, none were extricable from the other down years of that 2002-06 era.

Had I not watched it live, making the late, dark drive from Toronto back to Kingston, Ont., afterward, I probably wouldn’t have been able to tell you what season one of my favourite random Raptors memories occurred in. Instead, the moment stands out. Here are the moribund, post-Carter Raptors storming back against the Washington Wizards, erasing a 22-point second-half deficit. As they take the lead late, Jalen Rose ascends the scorer’s table, arms in the air, encouraging the Air Canada Centre faithful to get even louder. The Raptors win, 103-100, Rose leads the way with 26 points and the Raptors are within seven games of .500 for the last time that year.
