Synopsis: In my latest for The Athletic Toronto, I wrote about Marc Gasol’s debut with the Raptors and how it highlighted what the team is hoping for from their big deadline gamble.
NEW YORK – It was a strange sight. After 11 years playing only in Memphis Grizzlies colors, Marc Gasol checked in at Madison Square Garden donned in Raptors red. Gasol did his best to make things look as familiar as possible as quickly as possible.
Checking in with the second unit, he was a fulcrum in a quick 7-0 Raptors run to end the first quarter. After feeling his way in, Gasol began operating as Gasol does, taking command of the offence from the high post. The league leader in elbow touches for several years running, Gasol took his place at the left edge of the free-throw line, ready to answer a few questions that will define the final third of the Raptors’ season and ultimately determine whether Masai Ujiri’s calculated risk at the trade deadline pays off.
